As featured in GQ Magazine December 2023 edition, we talked about top tips for embracing a a solo Christmas.
If you are spending Christmas alone this year, remember that it can still be fun! You are not alone either. In 2020, it was reported 1 in 9 Americans spent Christmas alone (YouGov data). One study has suggested that 1 in 6 people (8m individuals across the UK) will be spending Christmas alone this year. However depending on your circumstances, Christmas day alone does not have to be gloomy and finding ways to relax and embrace peaceful solitude can be a positive experience.
This year I am also in a similar situation as I am starting a new job and living abroad from family and friends, so I too can personally relate to this blog post.
Here are some ideas (and also what I will be doing) to make the most of a solo Christmas:
- Plan your Christmas schedule - make it fun!
Decide how you want to spend the day and plan activities that make you happy. Consider creating a schedule to keep yourself occupied and making it the most positive experience you can.
- Lots of video calling - connect virtually
Even if you can’t be together physically, schedule video calls with friends or family members. It's a great way to share the holiday spirit and stay connected. I have one friend where we always end up separated at Christmas and this has become an annual tradition of video calling that I look forward to each year.
- Celebrate how you want
- Treat yourself
Treat yourself a little. Whether that's a bit of online shopping therapy, stock your favorite foods, some spa time, or indulge in your favourite snacks.
- Create your own solo traditions
Establish your own solo Christmas traditions. This could be anything from going to a favourite place, cooking a certain meal or doing a favourite hobby. You do you!
- Enjoy the outdoors
- Time for self-reflection and set 2025 goals
- Make it a day of amusement
- Participate in Volunteer Work
Depending on how you feel, spending part of your day volunteering for a local charity can be very rewarding. There are many organisations that would love volunteers, which can bring a sense of fulfillment.
Do you have any other extra tips for people spending Christmas alone this year?
As mentioned in the GQ article, one of the most essential tips to keep in mind this Christmas being spent alone is self care.
This one is probably the most important of all - take care of yourself mentally and physically. Practice self love and self-care activities such as journaling, meditation, yoga, exercise, or enjoy a relaxing bath with epsom salts.
In what ways do you suggest a person might turn a solo Christmas into a positive experience?
Remember that spending Christmas alone does not have to be isolating or sad. It can be an opportunity for self-discovery, relaxation, and doing things that truly bring you happiness.
If you do feel lonely, recognise your emotions and give yourself some compassion (you are human!). Feeling connected is still a natural part of life, and again connecting virtually is a brilliant way to stay connected with family and friends. Alternatively, journal your thoughts for some deeper self discovery.
Lastly, enjoy the peace and quiet of solitude. It is a great way to practice being content with your own company. Focus on having a day to do whatever makes you happy, plan things that are good for your mind, body & soul and enjoy!
